Yggdrasil is the Norse mythological tree that encompasses the world, connecting Earth, Heaven and Hell. This marching band show explores the concept of the sacred tree, having music that points towards Norse Mythology. Tons of unique and memorable sounds are stitched throughout the show, giving the audience an interesting spectacle to witness. Each movement has a very unique identity to it, giving the performers several opportunities to display their array of talents. The show uses musical selections including Mykonos by Fleet Foxes, Kingsfold, and old Norse folk melodies.
Part I - The Tree
Opening with tense sounds of strings and drums, beating over the ensemble, this piece of music is an introduction into the world under Yggdrasil. Small bits of Mykonos are played in the front ensemble, replaying the ostinato riff. Flutes sing the first lyrical line and start the driving force which is passed onto the brass. The percussion feature sets up the first impact.
Part II - Connection
This part is full of energetic rhythms, one being a metal riff and the other being a strong latin vibe. The performers have lots of room to explore different genres of playing, which allows for more visual styles as well. Of course, for the final latin impact we had to have a strong cowbell.
Part III - Somber Song
Somber Song is a display of the difficulties and hardships that are felt within Yggdrasil. Using an old Norse melody, a low brass or cello trio plays the somber song, leading into the impactful moment of Kingsfold, pulling as much emotion and power as possible out of the ensemble.
Part IV - Sacred.
Opening with unique splashes of sounds, this part is meant to connect Earth, Heaven and Hell together. With it being the finale, percussion and woodwinds are giving more time to shine with exciting features. The percussion gets to show off a beautiful array of colorful sounds overlayed with a powerful rhythm. The show ends with a triumphant sound, and a final statement of the main motif, slightly altered.
